Amy Lou Adams was born in Vicenza, Italy, on August 20, 1974. Her father was stationed at Caserma Ederle military base at the time of her birth, and she was the fourth of seven children born to Americans Kathryn and Richard Kent Adams. The Adams family, who belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, moved from base to base until they settled in Castle Rock, Colorado, when Adams was about eight years old.
Adams sang in the Douglas County High School choir and worked as an apprentice at a local dance company while aspiring to be a ballerina. She later decided that the rigidity of ballet training was not for her and began to pursue a career in musical theater instead.
Movies and TV Roles
Adams worked as a dancer in a variety of theaters and playhouses in Colorado and Minnesota in the mid-1990s. She landed her first film role in the comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous by the end of the decade. Adams relocated to Los Angeles shortly after, encouraged by co-star Kirstie Alley, and auditioned for additional roles. She was cast in one on a television show, but it was later canceled.
Adams went on to appear in several short films and as a guest star on television shows. She was also cast as Brenda Strong in Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can (2002), a role that, according to Spielberg, should have launched Adams’s career. But it wasn’t until she starred in the 2005 film Junebug that Adams received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress as well as a Special Jury Prize for her performance.
‘Enchanted’ and ‘Julie & Julia’
Adams landed the role of a Disney cartoon songstress who enters the three-dimensional world in the fantasy musical Enchanted in 2007. She received another Supporting Actress Oscar nomination the following year for her role as a nun in 2008’s Doubt, co-starring Meryl Streep. Then, in 2009, she starred in Julie & Julia, a popular culinary comedy about famed chef Julia Child, as a young, aspiring cook. The film, directed by late filmmaker Nora Ephron and earning nearly $130 million at the global box office, starred Adams once again alongside Streep.
Adams was dubbed “Hollywood’s New It Girl” by MSNBC in March 2008, and she admitted that she is still uncomfortable with her “It-ness.” Adams was quoted in the article as saying, “I always associated ‘It Girls’ with a specific type of sexuality. So, I don’t think in that way. At the moment, I don’t associate that with myself. I’ve been working, which is very grounding, and when you’re working, you don’t get a sense of the outside world.”
‘Doubt’ and ‘American Hustle’
Adams has continued to play a variety of roles to critical acclaim, earning Academy Award nominations for her roles in David O. Russell’s drama The Fighter (2010) and Paul Thomas Anderson’s drama The Master (2012). Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008), Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009), and The Muppets (2010) are among her other credits (2011).
She made her comic-book debut in 2013 as reporter Lois Lane in Man of Steel, and she reprised the role in the 2016 sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In 2013, she co-starred with The Fighter co-star Christian Bale in the ensemble cast of Russell’s American Hustle. Adams was nominated for another Oscar, this time for Lead Actress, for her portrayal of a 1970s-era con artist caught in a web of competing interests. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance.
‘Big Eyes,’ ‘Sharp Objects’ and ‘Vice’
Adams won her second Golden Globe for her performance as artist Margaret Keane in Big Eyes in 2014. Adams received critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination in 2016 for her starring role in the sci-fi blockbuster Arrival, which was based on Ted Chiang’s short story Story of Your Life. That same year, she starred in Tom Ford’s psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, and in 2017, she reprised her role as Lois Lane in the superhero ensemble Justice League.
Adams went on to co-produce and star in the Jean-Marc Vallée-directed adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel Sharp Objects, for which she won a Golden Globe for her lead performance. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her performance in Vice as Lynne Cheney, the wife of former Vice President Dick Cheney (2018).
