Are you looking for an Amazon Associates review? If you want to make money online, you might have heard of the Amazon Affiliate Program. But you may wonder if it is worth it.
Amazon Affiliate Program, also called “Amazon Associates”, can be an easy way to monetize your website or blog. Simply sign up, get instant approval, and place Amazon affiliate links on your site. Whenever someone makes a purchase on Amazon through one of your links, you get a commission.
The internet is rife with reports of scams. Affiliate marketing is particularly true in that regard. With Amazon Associates, you don’t have to worry too much about its legitimacy. After all, Amazon is the largest e-commerce platform that dominates the online market.
However, does that sounds too good to be true? Can affiliate marketers really make a lot of money from Amazon Associates?
To help you make a more informed decision, I have thoroughly researched Amazon Associates so I can tell you more about it.
At the end of this review, I’ll also share with you a platform where I’ve learned affiliate marketing skills that have enabled me to make a full-time passive income.
In this Amazon Associates review, I’m going to cover the following.
What is Amazon Associates?
Amazon Associates, or the Amazon Affiliate Program, is an affiliate marketing program. Amazon Associates membership is completely free for website owners and bloggers. They promote Amazon.com products on their websites using links. When customers click on the links and buy products from Amazon, they receive a referral fee.
Affiliates receive a commission when a website visitor clicks on a link to an Amazon product and purchases it. The visitor must make a purchase within 24 hours or add an item to their cart and make a purchase within 89 days. Typically, commissions range from 1% to 10% of the purchase price, minus shipping, taxes, and fees.
If you already have a website or blog and your content offers opportunities for product mentions, Amazon Associates is for you. For example, if you have a recipe blog, you can include links to product ingredients.
If you sell products directly on your website, Amazon Associates is not the best solution for you, but you can make money by combining product sales with affiliate sales.
How To Sign Up for Amazon Associates?
To participate in the Amazon Associates program, you must have a website that meets Amazon’s requirements. Next, you will need to fill out an application. If the application is accepted, Amazon will require you to include an affiliate link on your website.
In posts that contain affiliate links, the Federal Trade Commission also requires affiliate marketers to clearly disclose their relationship with retailers. This means that affiliates should make all disclaimers easily accessible to readers.
Amazon Affiliate Program Rules and Requirements
Being an Amazon Associate is a great way to monetize side projects or make extra money from your brand. However, Amazon has guidelines that Associates must adhere to, which it’s best to familiarize yourself with before jumping in. Failure to comply can result in termination from the program.
Most of the rules are designed to encourage ethical behavior while preventing associates from taking advantage of the system. Here are a few important rules to remember:
- You must indicate on your website or in your communications that you may receive compensation for your referrals.
- You must not make false or misleading claims in your recommendations.
- With few exceptions, you should avoid referencing prices, as they change frequently.
- Amazon affiliate links should not be used in offline promotions, eBooks, or emails.
- Do not use link shorteners for affiliate links.
The full Amazon guidelines can be found here.
How Does Amazon Associates Work?
Affiliates earn commissions under the Amazon Affiliate Program by creating unique product links, promoting the links on their website, and directing visitors back to Amazon. How it works:
- On the platform, website owners create an Amazon affiliate account.
- Amazon assigns each website owner a unique affiliate ID.
- Affiliates can create affiliate links in their Amazon portal once their application is approved.
- The links are then placed in blog posts or other areas of the affiliate’s website.
- The affiliate receives a commission when someone clicks on the link and makes a purchase.
Depending on how many referrals you generate for Amazon, you can earn between $100 and $20,000 on average through the Amazon Affiliate Program. The Amazon affiliate program works on a commission basis, meaning you earn a percentage of each sale.
The commission rate varies depending on the product category. For example, if you run an automotive blog, you can earn 4.50% on each sale. If you sell three $1,000 car parts in a day, you will earn $135 for those three transactions. If you sell the same product 30 times per month, you will earn $1,350 per month.
The numbers may be low at the beginning of your journey as an Amazon Associate, so make sure you have another source of income besides being an Amazon Associate.
It’s important to check the Amazon Associate Program commission rate per product category before you sign up on the platform. You can then calculate how much you could earn based on your website’s niche.
Once you have added affiliate links to your website, you should focus on driving traffic to those links to increase your chances of earning. Publishing content frequently, such as a blog or Instagram posts, can help keep existing followers engaged. This can also help your website rank higher in search engine results and attract new readers.
Consider creating a product page where you can list multiple affiliate links to add more affiliate links to your website. This way, readers can also easily access the items you recommend.
Alternatively, you could start a series of weekly or seasonal posts where you review products. Experiment with Amazon’s link, button, and banner options to highlight the products you recommend.
Use Google Analytics to track traffic to your site, and Amazon’s affiliate reviews. This will help you determine if your tactics are effective or if you need to change your strategy.
Cons and Complaints of Amazon Associates
It’s easy to understand why some doubt the reliability of Amazon Associates when so many people claim that it’s a scam.
Let’s examine the biggest grievances people post online.
1. Link Cloaking Is Not Allowed
I use link cloaking for all affiliate links. I also do this for merchants with whom I currently have no relationship.
Although the term “cloaking” may sound creepy, link cloaking is common practice among many affiliate marketers. If you link to a company’s product, you will most likely come across URLs like this: companyname.com/productname/B07NV48TJD/? encoding=UTF8
As an affiliate marketer, this can pose a problem. Some users are less likely to click on links if they can not see where they are being directed. Link cloaking involves converting an external affiliate URL into a shorter and less intimidating URL. This seemingly long link might look like this, for example:
Amazon’s stance on link cloaking is a bit confusing. Many users interpret Amazon’s compliance policies as prohibiting link cloaking.
To be on the safe side, you should avoid cloaking your Amazon links and instead use a simple affiliate link that links directly.
Cloaking your links makes managing your Amazon affiliate links much more difficult. If you change a link, you have to update it everywhere it appears on your site.
Outbound clicks to Amazon can now be tracked with Google Analytics, but it’s not as reliable as HTTP redirection.
2. Only 24-Hour Cookie Window
To track sales conversions, affiliate programs use web browser cookies. A cookie window attributes a sale to an affiliate if it occurs within a specified time frame.
The average cookie duration is usually between 1-30 days for each affiliate program. This means that if someone makes a purchase through the referral link within these 30 days, you will receive a commission.
Affiliate programs typically allow a 30-day window between the first click and the purchase.
No, not Amazon. A cookie from its Associates program lasts only 24 hours.
As a result, you’ll only get credit if the prospect purchases within 24 hours of clicking your link.
Interestingly, Amazon increases the cookie duration to 90 days when a special link is created to automatically add the product to the viewer’s cart when the viewer clicks on the link.
Moreover, Amazon makes it very easy to purchase other products, so this can really add up. If you are selling low-priced items, you can use Amazon’s affiliate program to increase your revenue per click.
3. Suspension of your Amazon account is possible at any time
Your Amazon account may be suspended if you do not properly meet Amazon standards, such as poor reviews, pre-shipment return or cancellation rates, and delayed shipping rates.
Amazon account suspensions can last for different lengths of time. It can last for a day, but sometimes it can last forever. If you receive a notice that your account is suspended, make sure you put an action plan (POA) in place that outlines what improvements you will make to your account to ensure you are in compliance with Amazon terms and conditions.
Affiliates report that having their account suspended is a bigger problem than usual with Amazon. They also report that it is difficult to resolve the issue and get approved again. Until the block is lifted, you cannot sell on the Amazon marketplace.
Therefore, you should never rely too much on a single merchant for affiliate marketing. It might be a good idea to join affiliate programs with other online platforms such as Walmart, BestBuy, and eBay.
4. No Links Allowed in Emails
As the world gets more competitive every day when it comes to acquiring valuable traffic, email marketing is still riding high. You may be thinking of including Amazon affiliate links in your email campaigns.
But wait. Don’t chop off your legs with your own hands. You can’t use an Amazon link in any email you send. This is especially annoying if you’re sending emails with a list of, say, recommended books.
By contract, you can’t even point your email subscribers to a web page on your own site that contains Amazon links. So, at the very least, I’d recommend not creating a private website with no other navigation options, referenced only by mentions in an email source.
If you participate in the Amazon Influencer Program, you can include links in your emails, but they must only lead to your influencer page on Amazon.
5. Audiences Can’t Be Funnelled To One Product
This can be a good thing or a bad thing.
On the one hand, if you send your visitors to Amazon, they are likely to buy more than just the item you suggest. As an Amazon affiliate, you will receive credit for all of these purchases. When you are selling a low-priced product, upsells can help you earn more money from your affiliates.
On the other hand, people can get lost on Amazon and may not buy the product you suggested.
Rather, they may buy something else.
If you are selling a high-priced item (one that costs more than $400), you should send people to a landing page that features only that product. You can try both options if you can reach the merchant directly.
6. Low Commission Rates
Last but not least, Amazon’s commission rates are terrible.
Although commission rates have increased, they still hover one to three percentage points below pre-Covid levels.
Home and Home Improvement affiliate commission rates were raised from 3% to 5%, but that is still three percentage points below the 8% commission rate that products in these categories used to command.
Business & Industrial Supplies commission rates rise from 3% to 5%, which is just under the 6% pre-Covid commission rate.
As for Health & Personal Care, commission rates go up from 1% to 2%, but that’s still significantly lower than the 4.5% commission rate before Covid.
Here are the new Amazon.com promotional commission rates:
- Shoes, Handbags & Accessories: 6.00%
- Office Products: 6.00%
- Kitchen: 5.50%
- Home: 5.00%
- Home Improvement: 5.00%
- Beauty: 5.00%
- Business & Industrial Supplies: 5.00%
- Health & Personal Care: 2.00%
Amazon’s commission rates vary depending on the product you link to. In some categories, you get nothing!
My preference would be to link to a beauty product that pays out 10% rather than a video game that pays out only 2%.
On a $50 product, 4% commission is only $2!
Some of Amazon’s services, such as Audible and Prime Video, are at a fixed rate or are part of a bounty program.
The Amazon Associates program was much better before 2016. There was a tiered payout system. You received a higher payout if you referred more sales.
The affiliate program was much better than it is today for affiliates who do hundreds of conversions per month.
Pros of Amazon Associates
1. Signing Up is Easy
Creating an account is straightforward. The process of signing up for an Amazon Associates account takes only a few minutes and you can start trading without filling out complicated paperwork or going through administrative hoops.
If you are focused on blogging or creating affiliate websites and building an online audience, Amazon Associates may be a good option for you.
2. Wide Selection of Goods
You can choose the products you want to promote on your Amazon affiliate site from an extensive list in the Amazon catalog.
Amazon sells more than 12 million products, not counting books, media, wine, and services. If you include Amazon Marketplace sellers, the total number of products increases to over 353 million.
3. Trustworthy Brand
Millions of people around the world trust Amazon, one of the world’s largest online retailers. Orders placed on Amazon are also known to be delivered on time. Shipping updates and estimated delivery times are regularly sent to customers.
When you sell Amazon products, you increase your chances of making conversions because of Amazon’s brand promise.
Amazon is as safe to use as any other established e-commerce website. It protects your personal and financial information and transmits all of it securely. Neither Amazon nor its users are ever allowed to use your personal or financial information outside of the Amazon online marketplace.
4. Universal Cookie
Since Amazon uses universal cookies, you get paid a commission on every product a visitor purchases on Amazon, not just the product mentioned in the link.
Aside from these benefits, Amazon is also known for its top-notch payment security features. Affiliates are always paid on time and receive top-quality security.
Any Better Alternatives To Amazon Associates?
Today, Amazon Associates is considered one of the top affiliate programs online due to the variety of products and high payout rates – with top affiliates earning up to 75% in commission.
It’s great news that Amazon Associates isn’t the only name around. Alternatives to Amazon Associates have helped affiliate marketing reach new heights.
Here are the Amazon Associates alternatives that offer equal value.
We have included ClickBank as our first Amazon Associates alternative. Known as one of the top American retailers and affiliate networks, ClickBank has thousands of physical and digital products on its site that affiliates can promote and earn a regular income from.
Founded in 1998, ClickBank’s transparency, high-quality tracking system, and high commissions that vendors provide to their affiliates have made this platform a trusted platform.
The simplicity of this platform is another reason why it is so renowned. This system is very easy to use on the backend and makes it very easy for affiliates and vendors to understand their numbers.
Affiliate programs like CJ Affiliate are among the largest around, as well as Amazon Associates. There are millions of companies, products, brands, and services available for online promotion at this site.
Among the products they offer is everything from technology devices to pet accessories and restaurants.
Barnes & Noble, J. Crew, and Office Depot are among the brands represented. The commission varies depending on the program.
CJ requires you to apply for each offer like Rakuten. Even if you’ve been accepted into the network, you need to complete this step. If you’re not used to it, this can be a frustrating obstacle to overcome.
CJ continues to be the best option for buyers due to its access to large brands. Despite its age, this affiliate network continues to deal with a wide range of premium brands that do not advertise elsewhere.
Another site similar to Amazon Associates is ShareASale. Affiliates can use this site to promote thousands of products, brands, and other websites. This site has an excellent payout rate, as well as a reputation for trustworthiness.
They represent brands such as Reebok, Sally Beauty, and Etsy. Commissions vary according to the program.
Almost any type of physical product can be found here as an affiliate offer. Viator, WP Engine, and the NBA Store are represented.
Affiliates with low performance may be kicked off ShareASale for insufficient balances due to its policies. Warnings aren’t always given.
If you are interested in starting to offer physical products, choose ShareASale. With so many affiliates offers available, this network is often referred to as an alternative to Amazon.
Affiliate programs like JVZoo have a large affiliate network that has 800,000 active advertisers. Their offers may resemble those of ClickBank because they focus on digital info products.
The JVZoo affiliate network connects affiliates with vendors. Affiliations and vendor relationships are facilitated by it without interference from high up. The result is that vendors have a great deal of control over how they design their promotions and where they choose to work with affiliates.
If you choose this network, you can make use of the experience you have gained working with digital offers at ClickBank. You can use the offers to work with any content you’ve already built out for CB offers.
A unique payment option available on this network allows commission payouts to be collected instantly. Only some affiliate offers can use this feature because it must be activated by the vendor.
It will be much like switching from Clickbank to JVZoo for affiliates. You start here with a head start since CB offers the same kinds of products. When it comes to selling digital products, it might be the best choice for you.
Beginners also love this network because of its friendliness. You won’t have much trouble getting accepted here, compared to other Clickbank replacements on this list. If you do join this network, you will have access to lots of resources that will assist you in getting started.
Affiliate Window, like the other Amazon Associates alternatives, offers affiliates thousands of products and services to promote online. Furthermore, Affiliate Window offers affiliates of different levels of experience the opportunity to participate in a global market. There are big brands represented by Affiliate Window, including Under Armour, Burton, and HP.
Rakuten offers an affiliate program that is highly regarded. Additionally, they offer affiliates an easy-to-use dashboard that displays earnings, clicks, and conversions information. Eight years in a row, this affiliate network has been voted the mThink’s best affiliate marketing network.
However, this affiliate marketing network only provides commissions on direct sales, and it only deals with physical goods. It may be more convenient to choose between information and physical products on another network if you prefer this.
Moreover, this network’s affiliate registration process is more difficult than other networks’. In order to get attention from advertisers, your website must be popular. There is more information to gather and it takes longer. After joining successfully, each affiliate offer must be applied for separately.
The health/beauty niche is the focus of Market Health, an affiliate marketing company with years of experience.
There is still a large number of products to sell, despite its narrow niche. The company managing the network also manufactures some of these health products.
Market health offers a physical product-focused network focused on health foods. Vitamins and supplements are among the products shipped directly to consumers, as are powders and creams.
Small affiliate networks have a tendency to maintain closer relationships with their partners. The rates here are higher than those on some other networks because publishers with strong websites can negotiate higher rates.
If personalized attention is what’s most important to you, choose this Amazon Associates alternative. Affiliate networks that sell their own products are few and far between and this is one of them.
PeerFly is an affiliate network focused on CPA offers, with a strong user platform and well-curated offers. The products you can promote include those in many different niches including health, fashion, and eCommerce. B2B offers are also available.
On the network, commission structures and affiliate offers are as diverse as the offers. With some advertisers, you can work out revenue share deals or CPS offers.
PeerFly has fewer affiliate offers than Google AdSense, but it has plenty of offers other than those that are digital.
PeerFly’s platform has been praised by many users in reviews. With its easy navigation and rich features, it was developed in-house by PeerFly.
Choose PeerFly if you want to start promoting CPA offers (but also have the flexibility to experiment with others on the same platform), and you want to mainly generate leads. With PeerFly, these kinds of affiliate offers will be easier to find.
Advertisers, publishers, and offers chosen by this network must be serious about its rules. Affiliates starting here may find it challenging, but if your experience is decent, you will encounter fewer low-quality offers.
eBay Partner Network
A vast affiliate network similar to Amazon’s, but eBay’s affiliate program operates differently.
Unlike Amazon, eBay rewards you based on the amount of traffic you drive. It could either be a better bargain or a worse bargain, depending on the product.
In light of eBay’s emphasis on CPCs, the traffic requirements for affiliates are higher than those for most programs. The rest isn’t too hard as long as your website has traffic.
When buyers follow your link but don’t trust the website however they end up on, they might stop short of converting. There are millions of accounts on eBay, a well-known website.
CPC commissions can be earned by selling physical goods through the eBay partner network. You could promote plenty of products and some of them come with high commission rates for affiliates.
Is Amazon Associates Worth It?
Despite the low commission rates, Amazon Associates is worth it. Content writers and social media influencers can monetize their traffic through the Amazon Associate program.
Amazon Associates is like a mega supermarket with everything under one roof. You must always do good research to achieve success. If you choose to promote the products, ensure that they are authentic. Visit sites like MunchEye and JVNotifyPro for product reviews and read other affiliates’ reviews.
Check out the customer ratings of products as well. If you really want to find out what a product is like, you should buy it.
To ensure you understand Amazon Associates’ affiliate program before joining, make sure you carefully review it. Overall, Amazon Associates looks like an offer you shouldn’t overlook.
Making money with Amazon affiliates is similar to any other affiliate program, but your payment commission largely depends on the number of sales you make each month.
So if you want to get a higher average commission, you should start selling cheaper products like eBooks quickly and then refer to high-priced products to increase your average commission (usually 6%).
You can then increase your Amazon Associates sales by making better referrals to your blog audience. Pick “a few products” that are worth paying every penny for, instead of making your blog an advertisement space.
To make money with Amazon affiliate links, you must provide valuable content, attract visitors with SEO, and use Amazon affiliate links.
If Amazon Associates is not working for you, then look for alternative ways to monetize your site.
Beware anyone who claims there are shortcuts or patent remedies.
Building and growing an Amazon Associates website takes time and effort. However, if you believe that you have what it takes to succeed, I encourage you to get started.
