Early Life

Alton Brown was born on July 30, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, to rural Georgia parents. Brown and his family moved from California to Georgia when he was seven years old. His father, the local newspaper’s publisher and editor, committed suicide, and his mother remarried.

Brown later stated that he learned to cook by watching his mother and grandmother in the kitchen. He also stated that he learned to cook in college “as a way to get dates.”

Brown worked as a cinematographer and video director after studying film at the University of Georgia drama department. He was the director of photography for R.E.M.’s video for “The One I Love.” He stated that he spent all of his time on set between takes watching cooking shows and felt he could do a better job. He met DeAnna Collins, whom he later married, through his work in film and television production.

Brown moved to Montpelier, Vermont, to train at the New England Culinary Institute with the goal of eventually starting his own cooking show.
