Early Life

Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was born on August 13, 1899, in London, England, to strict Catholic parents. Because of his obesity, he described his childhood as lonely and sheltered. He once claimed that his father had sent him to the local police station with a note asking the officer to lock him up for 10 minutes as punishment for bad behavior.

He also mentioned that as punishment, his mother would make him stand at the foot of her bed for several hours (a scene alluded to in his film Psycho). Hitchcock’s films would later reflect the idea of being treated harshly or wrongfully accused.

Master of Suspense

Hitchcock attended the Jesuit school St. Ignatius College before attending the College of London and taking art courses. He eventually got a job as a draftsman and advertising designer for the cable company Henley’s. While working at Henley’s, he began writing, submitting short articles to the in-house publication.

Even in his first work, he handled themes of false accusations, conflicting emotions, and surprising twists with impressive skill. In 1920, Hitchcock entered the film industry and took a full-time position with the Famous Players-Lasky Company, where he designed title cards for silent films. Within a few years he was working as an assistant director.

In 1925, Hitchcock directed his first film and began making the “thrillers” for which he became known worldwide. His 1929 film Blackmail is considered the first British “talkie.” In the 1930s he made classics such as The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and The 39 Steps (1935).

Movies: ‘Rebecca,’ ‘Psycho’ and ‘The Birds’

In 1939, Hitchcock left England for Hollywood. The first film he made in the United States, Rebecca (1940), won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Among his most famous films are Psycho (1960), The Birds (1963) and Marnie (1964). His works became known for their depictions of violence, although many of his actions merely serve as bait to understand complex psychological characters. His cameo appearances in his own films, as well as his interviews, film trailers, and the television program Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955-1965) made him a cultural icon.

Death and Legacy

In a six-decade career, Hitchcock directed more than 50 feature films. In 1979, he received the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award. Hitchcock died peacefully in his sleep one year later, on April 29, 1980, in Bel Air, California. Alma Reville, also known as “Lady Hitchcock,” his lifetime partner, assistant director, and closest collaborator, died in 1982.
