Early Life

Alan Joyce was born to a working-class family in Dublin, Ireland, in 1966. His father is a worker in a tobacco factory and his mother is a cleaner. Joyce attended the Dublin Institute of Technology and Trinity College, Dublin. He graduated with a degree in Applied Science and received an MSc in management science.

Joyce spent eight years working at Irish carrier Aer Lingus before moving to Australia to work for now-defunct Ansett.

He joined Qantas in 2000 as head of network operations, rising to CEO of Jetstar, Qantas’s low-cost airline, three years later. He raised revenue by charging for extra leg room and in-flight entertainment, snacks, and beverages, and within six months the business was profitable.

After turning the short-haul domestic carrier, with its 14 single-aisle jets, into a fleet of 34 planes flying to long-haul destinations, Joyce’s leadership skills were internationally recognized, and Jetstar won the Center for Asia Pacific’s (CAPA) Low Cost Airline of the Year Award in 2005 and 2007.

Despite being seen as an outsider for the job, Joyce was appointed CEO of Qantas in November 2008.

Days after taking up the position, he was forced to deal with speculation following leaks about secret BA-Qantas merger talks. The venture was later abandoned when the two sides failed to reach a deal.

In the face of recession, Joyce went ahead with the launch of the new spacious and fuel-efficient Airbus A380 superjumbo service to London, to increase capacity.

Personal Life

Joyce identifies himself as a Catholic. He joined the Australian Republic Movement in 2015, which argues that Australia should become a republic with an Australian head of state instead of a monarchy.

Joyce is an openly gay man. He successfully underwent prostate cancer treatment in 2011. Earlier this month, he and his longtime New Zealand partner, Shane Lloyd, married on the rooftop of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Circular Quay. They live in The Rocks, a Sydney suburb.
