Early Life

Shayaa was born on October 22, 1992, in Newham, London, to a Haitian father and a Dominican mother. His father sold crack cocaine. Heather, his mother, raised him alongside his four brothers and six sisters after moving to America. His life had been defined by violence and crime during his early years on the rough streets of town.

He was expelled from Stone Mountain Middle School in seventh grade after bringing a pistol to protect himself from bullies. After being expelled from every school in Dekalb County, his mother enrolled him in a Gwinnet County school. For the first few months, he thrived there, enrolling in their football program as both a wide receiver and a cornerback.

However, he returned to drug dealing and criminal activity. Shayaa was involved in a number of robberies in addition to drug dealing. He and his friends would profit from the loot by selling it to local drug dealers and pawnshop owners. They chose the number 21 as their gang name, and he tattooed it on the side of his face when he was 16 years old.

He was arrested several times, including once while driving a vehicle containing 22 grams of marijuana, 89 hydrocodone pills, a Glock.40 and a.9mm Ruger.

Career

Shayaa began looking for a way out of the streets after growing tired of his life as a thug. He approached Metro, a record producer Shayaa had known for years, to see if he could help him launch his career as a rapper.

Metro was intrigued, and Shayaa’s debut mixtape, ‘The Slaughter Tape,’ was soon released. ‘XXL,’ the famed hip hop magazine, named him one of the ‘Freshman Class’ of 2016. ‘Slaughter King’ was his second mixtape.

On July 15, 2016, he released his first EP, ‘Savage Mode,’ which was also a collaboration with Metro. It brought him international success and peaked at number 44 on the Billboard 200. The single ‘X,’ featuring megastar rapper Future, was certified platinum.

Under the alias “21 Savage,” he established himself as a rapper by collaborating with both Drake (‘Sneakin’) and Meek Mill (‘Offended,’ who were embroiled in a public feud.

He has also collaborated with Young Dolph, Lil Yachty, Rich the Kid, Lil Uzi Vert, Ralo, Dreezy, PnB Rock, and Lil Durk in recent years. At the ‘2016 BET Hip Hop Awards,’ he performed his single ‘X.’

On January 18, 2017, 21 Savage announced the signing of a record deal with Epic Records, a Sony Music Entertainment label.

From March to May of this year, the rapper embarked on his “Issa Tour,” before releasing his first full-length album, “Issa Album,” in July. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and sold 77,000 equivalent units in its first week.

Just months before the end of the year, 21 Savage collaborated with Offset and Metro Boomin to release “Without Warning” on October 31, 2017. The album debuted and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, receiving generally positive reviews from music critics. The album’s lead single, “Ric Flair Drop,” peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 2018, he appeared as a guest on Young Thug’s EP “Hear No Evil,” as well as on BlocBoy JB’s “Rover 2.0” and Ty Dolla $ign’s “Clout.”

In early December, 21 Savage began teasing his sophomore album “I Am > I Was” by posting the cover art, which featured a blurred image of himself. The tracklist was revealed on December 13, and the album was finally unveiled on December 21.

The album, which featured Travis Scott (II), Post Malone, J. Cole, Childish Gambino (Donald Glover), and others, became his first No. 1 album on Billboard after debuting at the top of the chart. Several songs from the album charted on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Soon after, “A Lot” received Grammy nominations for Rap Album of the Year and Best Rap Song, with “A Lot” winning Best Rap Song. The sequel to Savage Mode by 21 and Metro Boomin was released in 2020.

Savage Mode II, narrated in its entirety by actor Morgan Freeman, maintained the gothic mood of its predecessor while adding new twists along the way. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Spiral: From the Book of Saw, a short soundtrack accompaniment to the ninth film in the Saw horror series, was released in 2021, with appearances by Young Nudy, Young Thug, and Gunna.
